Dublin (PRWEB) April 11, 2008 -- The National Student Poker Championship 2008, sponsored by Devilfish Poker, attracted 278 runners to the Regency Airport Hotel, Dublin on Saturday April 5, 2008.
The ?65 (+ ?7 reg. fee) buy-in event created a total prize pool of ?18,070, was run by PokerIreland.ie, and won by James Scullion, a computer science student from Ballymena studying at Queens University, Belfast.
"I'll put some of it away," said Scullion of his ?4,000 winnings, "but probably use some to play similar sized buy-in events. I've never played in anything like this before or won anything like this before so it's great."
Scullion travelled to the event with three housemates and about a dozen poker playing friends from Northern Ireland. As he received his prize money his friend was heard to utter "Woahhh! Four grand. That's life changing money".
Twenty-seven players cashed at the event with the top 10 payouts being:
1st James Scullion - ?4,000
2nd David Downey - ?3,330
3rd Paul Murphy - ?3,000
4th Aaron O'Neill - ?1,395
5th Samantha Hayes - ?1,035
6th Dominic Marley - ?905
7th Neil Adams - ?725
8th Carlo Popplewell - ?540
9th Damien Kent - ?360
Event organizer and tournament Director Stephen McLean said, "I think all players, dealers and floor staff would agree that there was really a great atmosphere throughout the tournament. This is what poker should be all about, having fun, a good laugh and experiencing a really good competition."
