CARLE PLACE, N.Y. (Business Wire EON) May 2, 2008 -- 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc., the world's leading florist and a multi-channel retailer of thoughtful gifts for all occasions, has partnered with e-Scrap Destruction, an "e-waste" management and recycling company, to help alleviate the burden that discarded computer equipment is placing on the environment. Working with e-Scrap Destruction, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM has initiated a computer equipment recycling program at its Long Island headquarters and is planning to roll out the program to all its brands and businesses throughout the country.
In addition, on June 4, 2008, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM will conduct a recycling drive at the Company's retail store located at One Old Country Road in Carle Place, New York. Electronic waste recycling experts from e-Scrap Destruction will be onsite at the event to administer the collection of equipment.
People from the surrounding community and throughout Long Island and beyond are urged to visit the 1-800-FLOWERS.COM store in Carle Place from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm EDT on that day and drop off their old and broken personal computers, monitors and keyboards as well as other electronic devices such as DVD players and VCRs. Upon submitting their used equipment for recycling, they will receive a 15% discount toward a purchase from 1-800-FLOWERS.COM. The discount can be utilized at any of the Company's retail store locations, or by visiting www.1800flowers.com, or by calling 1-800-356-9377.
According to governmental estimates, approximately 2,630,000 tons of electronic waste is generated each year, consisting of used computer monitors, circuit boards and other such e-waste. More than 87% of this e-waste ends up in landfills or incinerators. Electronic waste contains significant levels of toxic substances including lead, mercury, cadmium and beryllium. When discarded into landfills, these substances can contaminate soil and groundwater.
"Protecting and preserving the environment is a vital responsibility shared by every business and by every private citizen," said Chris McCann, President of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM. "Our Company is proud to be taking an active initiative, incorporating e-waste recycling into our own business practices as well as reaching out to the community and inviting people to join us at our store in Carle Place on June 4, 2008 to submit their used computer equipment and other electronic components for recycling."
All used computer equipment and other electronic devices received during the community event will be recycled by e-Scrap Destruction. In addition to the environmental benefits, e-Scrap Destruction takes steps to ensure that the security and sensitivity of electronic data are protected. All material collected is completely shredded before being recycled.
